Boston, MA Medical Sharps Dialogue Meeting - May 21-22, 2008

The first national multi-stakeholder dialogue meeting for medical sharps took place on May 21-22, 2008 in Boston, MA. Over 40 stakeholders met to discuss the issues of Source Control, Collection and Transportation Infrastructure, Regulations and Enforcement, and Education and Outreach. The meeting resulted in two work groups, which will present their findings at the second dialogue meeting. Realizing the insufficiencies in the data available, a Data Work Group was established in order to better quantify the sharps problem and increase the understanding of the issue. A Pilot Project Work Group was also established to learn from current collection projects. PSI has posted the Product Stewardship Action Plan for Medical Sharps, a background document for those entering the dialogue process, after incorporating comments and suggestions from current stakeholders. A second Dialogue Meeting will be taking place in September 2008 in Sacramento, California.
