  PSI Networking Call Series:
March - June 2008

Pharmaceuticals

Date: May 1, 2008
Time: 2:00 - 3:30 PM EDT

Overview: There is growing evidence that the improper disposal of pharmaceuticals is responsible for a number of problems, including accidental poisonings, teen drug abuse and waterway pollution. In response, there have been increased efforts to manage waste pharmaceuticals across the country. During this call, presenters from state and local government agencies, including representatives from the Northwest Product Stewardship Council, Area Resources for Community and Human Services in St. Louis, Missouri, and the ME Department of Environmental Protection, will explore current efforts to address the problem of waste pharmaceuticals, including new pilot projects, promising collaborations, and the significant issues that remain. Speakers will also summarize initiatives across the country that are either studying the problem or implementing ways to solve it, including take-back programs at pharmacies and other collection points.

Moderator:

Dave Galvin (King County, WA Department of Natural Resources)
Dave is one of the managers of the “Local Hazardous Waste Program in King County,” which address household and conditionally-exempt small business hazardous wastes in the Seattle metro area.   Waste pharmaceuticals surfaced a few years ago as an emerging concern in Washington as well as across the country.  Dave has been working with PSI to establish a national dialogue on this topic while helping to get a large pilot project for pharmacy take-back started in Washington.  Dave coined the term, “household hazardous waste,” and has been working on small-quantity hazardous chemical issues for more than 25 years.  In addition, Dave is the current President of the PSI Board of Directors.
