SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — This week, the Missouri Product Stewardship Council (MO PSC) and the Product Stewardship Institute (PSI) kicked off a series of recycled paint demonstrations throughout Missouri. The demonstration series, “Recycled Paint: Better for Your Pocket and the Planet,” features the Discovery Center, where the visitor lobby and preschool are being repainted.

“These demonstrations showcase the high quality, low cost, and sustainability of recycled paint,” said Scott Cassel, CEO and founder of PSI. “We’re excited to be partnering with the Missouri Product Stewardship Council and two of North America’s most experienced recycled paint manufacturers to help people recognize the value of recycled paint in reducing waste and creating a circular economy for paint.”

The recycled paint used to decorate each site was donated by GDB International and Amazon Paint, recycled paint manufacturers that are also founding members of the International Paint Recycling Association. The recycled paint demonstrations aim to inspire support for product stewardship for paint in Missouri. Product stewardship works to hold companies responsible for the full life cycle of products they put onto the market, help fund sustainable recycling infrastructure, and minimize the negative environmental and health impacts of consumer products.

“Paint is one of the most expensive products for local household hazardous waste programs to manage, said Lisa McDaniel of the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District, one of the demonstration project partners. “Paint stewardship has the potential to relieve local governments and taxpayers of that financial burden while also supporting a vibrant recycling system.”

“This project is helping transform our space and make it more inviting for our many visitors,” said Tyler Moles, the Discovery Center’s advancement director. “We’re thrilled to not only refresh our preschool and lobby, but also to be able to put into action our dedication to environmental sustainability.”

The other fall/winter 2021 site in the “Recycled Paint: Better for Your Pocket and the Planet” series is the municipal center in Ashland. Additional sites in other Missouri locations will be unveiled in spring 2022. For more information on the demonstrations and paint stewardship, visit missouripsc.org/paintdemos.
